Plassey Shipwreck
The Plassey Shipwreck – A Must-See on Inis Oírr
The Plassey Shipwreck is one of the most iconic sights on Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands. Perched dramatically on the island’s rocky shoreline, the wreck of the MV Plassey, washed ashore in 1960, has become a must-visit attraction for those seeking adventure, history, and unforgettable views during their trip to the Aran Islands.
What is the Plassey Shipwreck?
The Plassey shipwreck is the rusted remains of a cargo vessel that ran aground on Inis Oírr during a dark stormy night in 1960. Originally a naval trawler built in 1940, it was converted into a cargo vessel and acquired by the Limerick Steamship Company in 1951, at which point it was renamed the Plassey. On the night of March 8, 1960, during a fierce storm, the Plassey ran aground on Finnis Rock, just off the coast of Inis Oírr. The ship was carrying a variety of cargo, including goods not commonly seen on the island at the time, such as biscuits, cookies, and even modern toilets.
Miraculously, all crew members were saved thanks to the heroic efforts of the local islanders. This dramatic rescue is celebrated to this day, with photographs of the event displayed in Tí Ned, a local pub on the island. A few weeks later, another Atlantic storm lifted the ship off the rocks and threw it further inland – where it still sits today, a powerful reminder of the unpredictable forces of nature and the courage of the Inis Oírr community.

Father Ted Fame
The Plassey Shipwreck gained international fame when it appeared in the opening credits of the beloved 1990s Channel 4 TV series, Father Ted. The comedy follows the parochial life of three priests in rural Ireland, introducing viewers from around the world to the rugged beauty of many areas of County Clare. The series is still celebrated throughout the year with an annual Father Ted Festival on Inis Mór, and guided tours from Kilfenora, County Clare.
Since its appearance, the wreck has become a favorite spot for tourists and fans of the show, inspiring countless photographs, paintings, and visitor stories. Its role in “Father Ted” has cemented the Plassey as more than just a historical site – it’s a cultural icon that continues to draw visitors to the Aran Islands.
Facing the Atlantic
The Plassey Shipwreck has stood the test of time, but it remains vulnerable to the forces of nature. Exposed to the harsh Atlantic elements, the ship’s rusting hull has experienced gradual deterioration over the decades. The winter of 2013-2014 brought particularly destructive storms to the Aran Islands, with massive waves and strong winds that damaged parts of the wreck. Despite this, the Plassey continues to stand as a powerful reminder to us all of the power of the sea. . Today, the wreck is a popular destination for photographers, history enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a unique experience on Inis Oírr.
